Personal Insurance
Ontario auto insurance changed on July 1, 2026. Your renewal will ask you questions.
Ontario's accident benefits (the Statutory Accident Benefits Schedule — SABS) used to arrive as a standard package. Under the 2026 reform, most of those benefits became optional. If you're injured in a collision, these benefits are the ones that pay for treatment, replace income, and fund care — so the choices deserve ten minutes of understanding before a signature.

What stayed mandatory for everyone
Medical, rehabilitation, and attendant care benefits remain in every auto policy.
What became optional
- Income replacement
- Non-earner benefits
- Caregiver benefits
- Housekeeping and home maintenance
- Lost educational expenses
- Visitor expenses
- Damage to personal items
- Death benefits
- Funeral benefits
Three facts that matter at renewal
- Nothing is removed automatically. Your existing policy renews with the same benefits and limits unless you — the named insured — agree in writing to change them.
- Eligibility narrowed. The optional benefits now apply only to the named insured, their spouse, dependants, and drivers listed on the policy.
- Your auto insurer is now first payor for medical and rehabilitation expenses (medication excepted), ahead of workplace or private health plans.
